Hello, my name is Chao Tan. I hail from Weifang, Shandong Province, which is renowned for its international kites. Presently, I am a master's student of Hotel Management at Macau University of Science and Technology. My current research endeavors involve an in-depth exploration of the participants' experiences at the China Animation Expo, analyzed from the perspective of social identity and existentialism. Moreover, I am intrigued by various sub-cultures. My educational background encompasses diverse domains, including Chinese kongfu during my middle school years, followed by accounting, and e-commerce during high school, and anime voice acting and performing arts at the university level. As a graduate student of Hotel Management, I have embraced the concept of Crossover as one of my main themes. In truth, it is challenging to encapsulate my vivacious persona solely through the lens of transboundary. why want applaction phd?

In the course of my interdisciplinary exploration, I became increasingly interested in the subculture of special groups, which prompted the selection of my master's thesis topic. Specifically, I chose to investigate the profound experiences of participants in Chinajoy, one of China's largest anime conventions. As a former participant, I was able to secure interviews with industry insiders, and during these conversations, I discovered a compelling phenomenon: despite the dual pressures of economic and cultural regulation, senior participants persisted in their non-profit pursuits and utilized various strategies to resist these pressures. Some opted to engage in seasonal work, while others sought alternative paths outside the industry. Indeed, some even proclaimed their intention to return to the anime stage to establish a public welfare group once they had amassed sufficient funds. As a member of this subculture, I was deeply moved by their resilience, and as a scholar, I was intrigued by the power dynamics and external environmental resistance that characterized this community. At a deeper level, the process of dialoguing with participants was, in effect, a process of self-dialogue. As a gay man, I observed that this space was characterized by a broad tolerance of sexual minority groups, which further motivated me to explore the interaction between sexual minority groups and other participants at this expo. Ultimately, this research will serve as a critical reference for the marketing of China's anime conventions, as well as for understanding the relationship between sexual minority groups and these cultural events. This, in turn, has been a key motivator for me to pursue a doctoral degree.
